In studies that were funded by the National Institute of Health, the unknowing participants were intentionally infected sexually transmitted diseases. While it is easy to place blame solely on the U.S. government, the Guatemalan authorities and others maintain some culpability as they were cooperative in these immoral and unethical human rights violations, where researchers systematically and repeatedly exploited profoundly vulnerable individuals.
Victims have not received restitution and many have been left untreated. Several cases have been filed on behalf of the victims. In a recent hearing, federal judge, Sarah Gantz, dismissed the $1 billion lawsuit against the Johns Hopkins University and other defendants involved in the government experiments, but gave the Plaintiffs instructions to file an amended complaint by October 14, 2016.
